Hand carved triple serving bowl in Scottish Spalted Beech, wood turning, wood carving, Scottish gift, treen
Every time for the last 10 years or so i have been dropping subtle hints to my good friend and mentor Robert the Spruce that he won’t fit into his house one day due to the unbelievable amount of his wood turning/carving on every single bit of available space. Finally he has given me some of his work to “find a new home”. Each piece has been made by his experienced hands and, just like me, he knows the origin of each piece of wood.
This triple serving bowl is made form some beautiful Spalted Beech. It came from a tree that grew near Ullapool, West Coast of Scotland. Beech is hard, similar in density to Oak and has an intricate grain. Colour-wise it is a light orange-brown with highlights of cream and lighter browns. The spalting (black lines and streaks) is caused by a fungus as it works its way through the wood. Its add a striking and very unique pattern with no two pieces of Spalted Beech ever being patterned the same way. Another property of Beech wood is its incredible anti-bacterial properties, bacteria that comes into contact with this wood literally dies. This makes this wood perfect for chopping boards and food bowls.
Robert has used various carving and rotary tools in the creation of this bowl adding his own style to create a unique and eye-catching piece of wood art. He has finished with Danish Oil, one of the food safe oils so this bowl can be used to serve your favourite nuts and nibbles. As with all his pieces he has added is Spruce tree makers mark, in this case to the underside of the bowl.
